How SkinPen Works

What to Expect

Appointment Time

Most appointments take 45–60 minutes, including cleansing and topical numbing.

Comfort

We apply a topical numbing cream beforehand. Most people describe it as mild pressure or a light “scratching” sensation.

Downtime

Expect redness and a sunburn-like feeling for 24–72 hours. Some patients have dryness or light flaking for a few days. Most return to normal activities the next day.

When You’ll See Results

You may notice an early glow within a week, but the most meaningful improvements (texture/scars/fine lines) usually build over 4–12 weeks as collagen remodels.

How Many Treatments Do I Need?

For best results, we typically recommend a series of 3–6 sessions, spaced about 4–6 weeks apart, depending on your goals.

Pre-Treatment Guidelines

To help your skin heal beautifully:

Avoid sunburn and minimize sun exposure for 1 week before treatment
Stop retinoids (tretinoin/retinol) 3–5 days prior (unless we advise otherwise)
Avoid exfoliating acids (AHA/BHA) 3–5 days prior
Arrive with clean skin (no makeup if possible)
Tell us if you have a history of cold sores—preventive medication may be recommended

Aftercare (The First Week)

Keep skin clean and moisturized
Avoid makeup for 24 hours (or as directed)
Avoid strenuous exercise, saunas, steam rooms for 24–48 hours
Avoid retinoids and exfoliating acids for 5–7 days
Use daily SPF and avoid direct sun exposure while healing

Safety & Who Should Avoid Microneedling

SkinPen is safe for many skin types when performed by trained medical professionals. You may not be a candidate if you are:

Pregnant or breastfeeding (often we postpone elective treatments)
Experiencing active acne breakouts, open wounds, or skin infection in the area
Taking isotretinoin (Accutane) currently or recently (we’ll review your timeline)
Prone to abnormal scarring/keloids (case-by-case)
On certain blood thinners or have uncontrolled medical conditions (case-by-case)
